• Party Gras: Bringin’ Music Back to the Delta - Area Musicians to Raise Money, Collect Donated Instruments for Fellow Artists Hurt by Hurricane ---------------------------------------------------------- “Party Gras” Dinner-Dance February 12 Features Local Musicians New Orleans, a city known for generations for its music, remains quiet as attempts are being made to repair the massive damage from Hurricane Katrina. Professional musicians from the city that gave jazz to the world lost gigs – and even their instruments. Now, central Indiana musicians are raising funds – and seeking donations of instruments – to help their fellow musicians in the New Orleans, Biloxi, and Jackson, MS, area get back on their feet. In conjunction with musicians all over the country, Indianapolis Musicians Local 3 of the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) is launching a fundraising drive that will include “Party Gras,” a dinner-dance at the Ritz Charles, 12156 N. Meridian St., on Sunday, February 12, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Patrons who purchase the $100-per-person tickets for the event that is subtitled, “Bringin’ Music Back to the Delta,” will be entertained by a variety of well-known area musicians including Tommy Mullinix and the Naptown Strutters, the Cool Chilis, Cathy Morris, the Al Cobine Band, Everett Greene and Marvin Chandler, and members of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Under the auspices of the AFM Replacement Instrument Drive, union members are also seeking donations of playable instruments that will be donated to their fellow AFM members who lost theirs in the hurricane and its aftermath. Instruments may be dropped off at the union offices at 325 N. Delaware Street in Indianapolis. Other arrangements can be made by calling the office at (317) 636-3595. They may also be sent directly to AFM Local 174-496, 2401 Esplanade Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70119. Cash contributions will be matched by the national AFM’s Gulf Coast Relief Fund. (Checks should be made payable to the fund.) A portion of the donations raised from this effort will go towards Local 3’s own Destitute Members’ Fund. Donations to the effort, whether cash or in-kind, are deductible to the full extent of the law. Persons who cannot attend the event or who do not have instruments to donate are also encouraged to make donations to the cause.
